Food Grease Can Ruin Your Drain

No Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Down the Drain!

Visit the City of Albany's FOG program page.

When FOG washes down the drain, even with hot water, after it cools, it sticks to the insides of the pipes in your home and in those that connect your home or business to the City's sewer. Eventually FOG will accumulate until it blocks sewer pipes, which then can create difficult and expensive maintenance problems for owners and the City. This can also cause a health concern if raw sewage backs up into homes, businesses, or overflows into streets and storm drains.

Garbage disposals do not keep FOG out of sewer pipes. Even products that claim to dissolve FOG may break up accumulation but that can only push the problem further down the line when the FOG hardens again.
